The Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) (Honours) will equip you with the necessary communication, technical and problem solving skills required to meet the high demand for graduates in mining engineering in Australia and the Asia Pacific Region.

Throughout the course, you will explore study areas in mineral deposit evaluation and processing, underground production systems, mine power and services, surface mining operations and mine environment and safety, to establish best practice in sustainable and safe mining.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) (Honours) is a four-year course, accredited by Engineers Australia – the global home for engineering professionals renowned as leaders in shaping a sustainable world.

As an accredited mining engineer you can work in government and private organisations, mining companies and consulting firms to design, install and supervise the use of mining machinery and equipment, inspect the progress of mining operations and work with geologists to investigate and carry out the extraction of ore bodies and mineral deposits.

Admissions Criteria for current Year 12 students and recent secondary graduates (the past 2 years)

Prerequisites 

  • Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics;
  • Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any English

A study score of 35 in Chemistry, any Information Technology or Physics equals 3 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 5 points.

Admission criteria for applicants with a Higher Education Study

This course uses the applicants’ entire academic record as part of its selection considerations.

Compulsory:  Previous higher education studies with results at a pass level, including any 'single subjects of study', or successful completion of a tertiary preparatory course such as the FedUni Federation Access Studies Program (FAST).

Admission criteria for applications with a Vocational Education and Training study

This course uses the applicants’ entire academic record as part of its selection considerations.

Compulsory: Successful completion of a relevant VET qualification at Certificate III level or higher.

Admission criteria for applications with work and life experience

Applicants who have not completed secondary education, or undertaken any TAFE or university studies will not be eligible for entry into this course. Applicants in this category should consider a pathway course such as Federation Access Studies (FAST) Program.

English language requirement

Overall IELTS band score of 6.0, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent.

2024 Indicative Fees

Fee Type: Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)

$8,948 student contribution amount

A Commonwealth Supported Place is subsidised by the Australian Government.  Your fees (student contribution amount) are set on an annual basis by the government and are determined by the discipline area and band of your individual units, not the overall course.  Each unit falls into a band which determines the student contribution.

2024 annual student contribution amounts for 1 EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) range between $4,445 Band 1 to $16,323 Band 4.  To find the Band, EFTSL and contribution amount for each unit, check the Sample Structure or refer to the 2024 unit listing.

Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and the indicative amount should be used as a guide only.  It is based on a typical enrolment for a student undertaking the first year of study in this course.  For 0.5 EFTSL (60 credit point) courses the certificate fee is displayed.  Total cost will vary depending on the units you choose, your study load, the time it takes to complete your course and any approved credit you receive.

You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of all or part of your student contribution.  You may also be eligible to defer payment of your SSAF through a SA-HELP loan.

Credit will be considered if you have successfully completed higher education or TAFE studies relevant to this degree. Advanced standing will be determined on an individual basis, depending on your eligibility for credit transfer, prior experience and qualifications.

Candidates seeking alternate entry can consider the following options:

  1. Federation Access Studies (FAST) program, including FASTP1203 Introduction to Technical maths. On successful completion of FAST, including FASTP1203 Introduction to Technical maths, students can apply for the Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) (Honours) for Semester 1. (The Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) (Honours) is unlikely to offer a mid-year intake).
  2. Enrol in single courses such as MATHS1001 Modelling and Change or MATHS1005 Secrets of the Matrix to demonstrate ability to be successful on the course.
  3. Apply for the Diploma of Engineering - Technical (FedUni TAFE, Ballarat) which offers an articulation pathway into Higher Education and a number of credits towards the Diploma of Engineering (Higher Education) or Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) (Honours)
