The Master of Specialist Teaching (TESOL) provides already qualified teachers or those looking to enter a TESOL career where an initial teacher training degree is not required (e.g. ESL teaching outside of primary and secondary schools) with training in first and second language acquisition, English phonology, and phonetics, English grammar, language-learning technology, TESOL classroom methodology, and research-based practice for supporting the language needs of diverse learners.
This course can be completed online/blended and is delivered part-time over 3 years.
You will learn essential skills and theories for teaching English to speakers of other languages. The Master of Specialist Teaching (TESOL) is designed for all education level and appropriate for those working in, or aiming to work in, tertiary, primary or secondary school contexts. A wide range of electives in the core disciplines of Applied Linguistics and Education are available.
You will have the opportunity to undertake a professional inquiry on a project of your choice, or a minor thesis completed in the field.
Our course allows you the option to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Specialist Teaching (TESOL).

Contact hours can vary depending on requirements, however typical contact hours for full-time study are around 25-30 hours comprising of on-campus classes, online learning and self-directed study.
Entry requirements (non year 12)Entry to the Master of Specialist Teaching (TESOL) is predicated on the completion of undergraduate study to a third year level or equivalent. Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements may present a case to be considered eligible for provisional entry. Credit is awarded to students who have completed a fourth year of university study or have equivalent appropriate qualifications.
English language requirement
Overall IELTS or equivalent band score of 6.5, with no band less 6.0; or equivalent.
Extra requirements
Applicants must provide a certified copy of their qualifications, including a full transcript/statement of attainment.

$4,445 student contribution amount
A Commonwealth Supported Place is subsidised by the Australian Government. Your fees (student contribution amount) are set on an annual basis by the government and are determined by the discipline area and band of your individual units, not the overall course. Each unit falls into a band which determines the student contribution.
2024 annual student contribution amounts for 1 EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) range between $4,445 Band 1 to $16,323 Band 4. To find the Band, EFTSL and contribution amount for each unit, check the Sample Structure or refer to the 2024 unit listing.
Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and the indicative amount should be used as a guide only. It is based on a typical enrolment for a student undertaking the first year of study in this course. For 0.5 EFTSL (60 credit point) courses the certificate fee is displayed. Total cost will vary depending on the units you choose, your study load, the time it takes to complete your course and any approved credit you receive.
You will also need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of all or part of your student contribution. You may also be eligible to defer payment of your SSAF through a SA-HELP loan.
