All people performing construction work require proof of having completed a general OHS construction induction for the industry. The course provides new building and construction industry workers with the introductory knowledge and skills needed to commence work within the building and construction industry. This unit of competency specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. The unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others. This includes communication and comprehension skills required to ask effective questions, verbally report hazards, and discuss OHS issues.
This unit covers identifying and reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.
For all TAFE applications; pre-training review questions and a literacy and numeracy review are part of the application process. On the day of training for CPCWHS1001 Prepare to work safety in the construction industry the identify of each student must be verified and recorded against accepted proof of identity documents that include: Australian Passport, Drivers Licence, Firearm Licence, Boat Licence, Proof of Age Card, Licence to Perform High Risk Work, Employee Card from a State; Territory or Federal Government Department or Agency, School Photo Id. Obtaining a USI (Unique Student Identifyer) is an entry requirement of all VET courses.

Applicants need to demonstrate the literacy and numeracy skills required to undertake this course through a test as part of the application process. The test will be conducted through Federation College prior to commencement of training. Feedback will be provided to the applicant on their results and types of support, if necessary, available to them.
