Ways of Reading and Seeing (BATCC1002)

In our media-dominated world, we are constantly reading, viewing and interpreting the world through the lens of print, literary, digital and screen media. These media provide the images, stories and soundtrack to our lives. We read or view for many reasons, including entertainment, information and social participation. Reading and viewing can also have a considerable influence in shaping our view of the world, and our responses to texts can be critical, aesthetic or affective. This course functions as an introductory course for the disciplines of literature, creative writing and media and screen studies. It introduces students to ways of reading and viewing literary, media and screen texts critically and with the skills to understand how their meanings are produced. Students will learn basic concepts of analysis applicable to literary, screen and digital media, as well as an understanding of the role of readers and viewers in constructing textual meaning. The course will examine ways of reading literary texts, still and moving images, and digital texts, including narrative structures, narration, time, plot, point of view, metaphor and allegory, reception, audiences and fandom.
