Legal Issues for Designer (BSDES3192)

"This course provides an opportunity to consider the various ways designers can obtain legal rights in their aesthetic design work and conversely how such designers might risk infringing against the legal rights in the work of others. It is designed to raise awareness of intellectual property issues in various fields of aesthetic design. It will permit those who successfully complete the course to identify those issues, be better placed to retain economic value from unique design and assess the legal risk from infringing activity. Beginning with an overview of the commercial law and regulatory terrain that a design-dependant firm operates within, the course explores four types of intellectual property likely to be relevant to such a firm: (i) confidential information; (ii) copyright; (iii) design registration; (iv) trade marks. In this there will be a detailed study of the complex relationship between copyright and design registration and an examination of the scope for international protection in each of the four areas."
