VET in Society (EDTAS2004)

This course is designed to raise students' awareness of the ways in which VET can both assist and impede the life-chances of individuals and groups in society. Students will develop an understanding of the social implications of VET policy developments and the reasons why strategies to increase participation rates may succeed or fail. They will understand that the issues in Australian VET are not necessarily the same as those in other countries. Students will study a particular equity group of their choice (eg students from a particular culturally and linguistically diverse background or from a low socio-economic group) and the relationship of group members to the VET system. They will visit a relevant agency to examine in detail services offered to clients and will reflect on ways in which in their own practice they could better cater for such students.
