This course enables students to explore and discuss the theory and practice of quantitatively based research as well as mixed methods research in the context of the practice based health sciences. Students will develop understanding of the core quantitative methods and techniques commonly used within the practice based health sciences to provide students with a working knowledge of the spectrum of alternative techniques for collecting and analyzing data. Whilst this subject will not provide the depth of understanding required to be a specialist in any particular quantitative technique, students will have a working knowledge of the foundations of descriptive and inferential statistics for application in a mixed methods study. Students will explore the emergence of mixed methods approaches; nature and purpose of mixed methods studies, choosing appropriate mixed methods designs, the synthesis of data in mixed methods research as well as the design of a mixed methods study.
