The overall aim of the course is to introduce a critical study of the history of the United States of America as the major power in contemporary world history. After introducing the formation of the USA as a series of British settlements in the seventeenth century, the American Revolution and the American Civil War of the nineteenth century, the emphasis of the unit will be on the `American Century¿, which begins at the end of the nineteenth century as the USA becomes the most powerful nation in the world. The concept of Empire will be a central one, and also the question of motivation for the USA¿s interventions in world affairs. The role of the Presidency and individual presidents will be a central focus, allowing us to understand the development of policies on race, work, women, the environment, military intervention and fiscal policy.
A CSP is subsidised by the Australian Government and students pay a contribution amount. Each unit is classified into a student contribution band, depending on the study area of the unit (this discipline may be different from the study area of your course).
