Fantasy and Science Fiction (LITCI1008)

This course introduces students to a critical exploration of fantasy and science fiction. The fantasy works to be studied include examples of secondary world, urban fantasy, and portal fantasy texts. The science fiction texts relate to a number of key themes which may include time travel, alien encounters, artificial intelligence and posthuman life, computers and virtual reality, utopia and dystopia, and gender and sexuality. Drawing on critical genre theory, the course explores definitions of fantasy, science fiction and speculative fiction, and key theoretical concepts such as fantasy¿s sense of wonder and science fiction¿s engagement with speculation, extrapolation, and thought experiments. Critical theories of fantasy and science fiction situate the selected texts in their historical contexts and address a range of social issues including gender and race.
