Entry requirements

This exciting new course in 2024 offers advanced training in technical arts specific to live theatre. Students who have previously undertaken courses in performing or visual arts and basic training in technology will benefit from advanced study into all aspects of stage and production management. The course focuses on educating well-rounded technical producers who could work solo or as part of a team at a high level.  As contemporary technical equipment is operated through a computer, there is a strong need for graduates with highly developed computer skills and technical knowledge applicable across a broad range of systems in theatres, galleries and other venues as well as site- specific events. Scheduling, faculty management, interpersonal skills for team collaboration and written skills for working with briefs, reporting, ordering and collaborating are also crucial. There are new and exciting innovations occurring in this industry through the application of new technology, as well as the inclusion of intimacy training for the arts environment.

Performing Arts technicians provide all technical support for artistic performances. They work with and support the artistic activity of directors, designers, performers, theatre managements and operations. Technical production for theatre and arts venues is a broad term, with duties and skills inclusive of the interpretation and execution of design; set building, bump-in and bump-out; stage and production management; budgeting and purchasing for productions; sound design, installation and operation; lighting design installation and operation; technical support for screen usage in live performance settings such as camera, video and phone uploads, online recordings and data projection; management of props and costumes and maintenance of venues and technical equipment. 
Potential employers across Australia and globally may include theatrical venues, theatre companies, arts tour managers, management for dance/opera, community/ youth/fringe companies, circus, cruise ships, educational institutions and musical producers.

Contact hours can vary depending on requirements, however typical contact hours for full-time study are around 25-30 hours comprising of on-campus classes, online learning and self-directed study.

Admission criteria for applicants with a Higher Education Study

Minimum requirements: This course uses the applicants’ entire academic record as part of its selection considerations.  Compulsory: Successful completion of an Bachelor degree at AQF level 7.  Previous higher education studies with results at a pass level or above, including any 'single subjects of study', or successful completion of a tertiary preparatory program such as the Federation Access Studies Program (FAST)

Admissions Criteria for Work Life Experience

Minimum requirements:
A minimum of 2 years of full-time (or part time equivalent) professional work experience in a related industry.

English language requirement

The minimum score required is an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6.0, with no individual band score less than 6.0, or equivalent scores such as PTE Academic or TOEFL.

2024 Indicative Fees

Fee Type: Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)

$8,948 student contribution amount

A Commonwealth Supported Place is subsidised by the Australian Government.  Your fees (student contribution amount) are set on an annual basis by the government and are determined by the discipline area and band of your individual units, not the overall course.  Each unit falls into a band which determines the student contribution.

2024 annual student contribution amounts for 1 EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) range between $4,445 Band 1 to $16,323 Band 4.  To find the Band, EFTSL and contribution amount for each unit, check the Sample Structure or refer to the 2024 unit listing.

Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and the indicative amount should be used as a guide only.  It is based on a typical enrolment for a student undertaking the first year of study in this course.  For 0.5 EFTSL (60 credit point) courses the certificate fee is displayed.  Total cost will vary depending on the units you choose, your study load, the time it takes to complete your course and any approved credit you receive.

Graduate Diploma of Theatre Production (120 Credit points), with nested Graduate Certificate in Theatre Production (60 Credit Points). Students may choose to enrol in the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. An exit point exists after the first four courses are completed. Students will be eligible to exit the course with a Graduate Certificate in Theatre Production. Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Theatre Production are eligible to apply for entry into the Graduate Diploma of Theatre Production with full credit (60cp). 

Applicants will be required to hold a valid Working with Children (WWC) Check prior to undertaking professional placements.

You will also need frequent access to a reliable high-speed internet connection.  You should expect to use approximately 5GB of data each month, per unit, just for study use.
