Develop your skills and knowledge for a career as a draftsperson. This qualification has been developed with the engineering and manufacturing industries. The course is designed to meet the specific needs of drafting in mechanical and machine construction and maintenance, steel fabrication, other fabrication services and assembly, mechanical services, electrical services, fluid power, piping assembly and related industrial applications.
Are you a school leaver? Or a mature student returning to work or study? Do you have trade experience and are looking to transition into a design office? You are eligible to apply for the Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting as it has no entry requirements. If you’re in employment with a training agreement, you can study the Certificate IV Engineering Drafting as part of a traineeship. It’s also a great course to study as a stepping stone to higher qualifications.

Course specifics
The Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting covers:
·    preparing sketches, charts, plans, 3D models and digital designs
·    calculating and performing stress testing
·    interpreting work assignment instructions and selecting material and equipment
·    collecting and analysing data, and carrying out computations
·    estimating material costs and planning finished works

Our facilities
Our SMB Campus is home to our Manufacturing and Engineering Skills Centre, which provides all the tools and supplies you need to bring your designs to life. You’ll have access to a fully equipped engineering workshop with lathes, guillotines, and welders. You’ll have the opportunity to use 3D printers, a 3D scanner, tensile testing machines, charpy impact test, CNC plasma cutter, and Mazak CNC lathe and mill.
In addition, you’ll get familiar with a professional suite of design software products such as AutoCAD and Inventor Professional for precise 2D and 3D drafting, design, and modelling with solids, surfaces, mesh objects and more.

Course delivery
You asked, and we listened. We now offer our Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting with flexibility, so you find the right balance between your studies, work, family and other commitments.
You can attend classes at our SMB Campus, or study online at your own pace. We incorporate the latest digital technology to complement our training methods so – if you choose to study online –you will require access to the internet and a computer capable of running computer-aided design (CAD) software. Our online learning system enables you to study in a safe, guided and fully supported manner with the same access to all learning, personal and wellbeing supports.

Hear from our students

“There’s lots to do in the workshop; lots of interaction in the classroom too. At this stage we have done a lot of material testing, so we’ve used the tensile tester, the hardness test, the charpy test and we’ve done a lot of experiments. The lecturer has also run us through a 3D printer. We’ve done a couple of scans on that too.

I would like to do small house design in sustainable living. I’m really interested in sustainability. I think it’s honestly the way of the future, being more careful about the materials that we are using and the impact that we are having.”
